Engine And Transmission
Even though I am not planning to do much to the engine and transmission I thought I would record what I have done or will be doing...
Engine removed. Just washed and shiny.
The Gear Stick and Housing
I have stripped my original cylinder head down to recondition it only to find that one of the guides were broken. After looking in to repairing it and even buying new guides and fitting them I was then informed that I would need to have the valves ground in to the seats to align the valves up in their new guides and make a perfect seal, this turned out to be rather expensive to do here in Sweden so my only available option was to get another head that didn't need parts machining in to it. a quick look on the ever faithful ebay located a head that will be being shipped over at some point.
Here is the head, it has been painted by a previous owner but I will be re-painting it to a nice red colour as well as de-coking it.
Another plus is that this head is newer and comes with unleaded valve seats so another job I don't have to worry about.
Update
I have been busy with the engine now that winter has arrived. I have stripped the engine of all external parts, then removed the clutch and finally I have separated the engine and the gearbox from each other.... Unfortunately I have forgotten to take the camera out with me so I don't have any pictures of the tear down....
So here are some pictures of where I am today
The gearbox has been stripped, cleaned and put back together without any gaskets so that I could spray it all without harming the new gaskets these will be fitted when the paint is dry.
The engine is now stripped of all parts apart from the distributor which I am leaving in place and masking off when I come to paint the engine. The engine will be painted red
I decided to remove the distributor and clean it and paint a couple of bits so here is a picture of it after it has been cleaned with a wire wheel in my drill and then clear coated it.
The engine is now fitted in to the engine bay and looking great even if I do say so myself.
With the engine in place I decided to start to fit the oil filter housing, distributor, engine stabilizer, fuel pump, dip stick, timing chain cover, water pump and put the starter motor together after it was chromed.
Here is the starter that has been chromed and painted black where needed
The cylinder head has now arrived from England so I have cleaned it up and started to paint it red ready to fit tomorrow.
And some more pictures of parts that are going back together cleaned and painted
A Plate Master cylinder's brake valve
After a recent trip to a local scrap yard i came home with an alternator from a 1986 Ford Fiesta so i got to work and stripped it down until i had both the aluminium halves of the casing separated and sent them away for polishing at a company called Nottingham Metal Polishers 0115 970 4312
Before
After
Here it is all complete with fan and pulley
And here it sits nice and proud with all the other shiny bits.
More parts that i have sand blasted and painted
Bottom pulley, spacers for cooling fan and water pump pulley.
On a recent trip to England i managed to get some parts
Hoses for coolant.
Decision change (yet again)
I have not been happy with the colour of the engine after painting it red so a decision has been made to re paint it again this time in shiny black.
After acquiring some paint stripper i decided that before i had bolted on too many engine parts it was time to remove the engine.
The engine is now removed and stripped of parts and the paint remover was painted on carefully with a paintbrush so as not to get it on the gearbox and sump which are remaining silver.
Now it is cleaned i will re paint it shiny black
